Project - Development of functional cardiomyocycte from within the heart

Ph.D. Student

The Heisenberg group for ischemia-reperfusion injury located at the Clinic for Cardiology, Pulmonary Diseases and Vascular Medicine (University Hospital Duesseldorf) and headed by Prof. Tienush Rassaf is inviting applications for PhD Students in the field of cardiovascular biology and cardiology.

The subject:

The cellular events that occur when a patient suffers a heart attack are still incompletely understood. Understanding this complex signaling will provide the basis for novel therapies.

The objective:

To characterize the signaling in cardiac cells that occurs during a heart attack and that helps to recruit mechanisms that help to regenerate the tissue by activating resident cardiac progenitor cells.

What we seek:

We seek enthusiastic, highly motivated PhD Students, who will join our research group working on novel strategies to identify and functionally characterize mechanisms that protect and regenerate the heart after an acute myocardial infarction, which is still the leading cause of death worldwide. The working atmosphere is international. Skills in molecular biology and cell biology are welcomed, and knowledge of mouse physiology and experience with transgenic mice is highly appreciated.

Techniques/methods:

Techniques include adenoviral and lentiviral gene transfer, micro RNA signaling (Deep sequencing, In situ hybridization), mouse cardiac progenitor cells and fully developed cardiomyocytes, molecular biology, biochemistry (nitric oxide metabolism), mouse genetics and microscopy. The successful candidates will use already established mouse strains and will contribute to the development of new lineages, which will be used for cell lineage tracing and functional analysis.

Contact:

The positions will be available immediately. Applicants should send a statement of interest, diplomas, a full CV, list of publications mail to the address below or by email to Dr. rer. nat. Ulrike Hendgen-Cotta (senior scientist) Ulrike.Hendgen-Cotta@med.uni-duesseldorf.de
