Protein Chemistry: Purification and Characterization Workshop

University of Florida - Interdisciplinary Center For Biotechnology Research , Gainesville, FL (U.S.A.)
05/06/96 - 05/10/96

Program:

In this workshop, recombinant human CAII from a bacterial expression system is used to provide
participants with a model for learning the principles of:

Protein Isolation and Purification
Tris-Glycine and Tris-Tricine SDS-PAGE Gels
IEF and Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis
In-gel Proteolytic Digestion for Peptide Mapping and Microsequencing
Enzyme Activity and Protein Concentration Assays
Immunoblotting

Students spend approximately 75% of their time at the bench performing experiments that have
been designed using a problem-solving approach. Lab lectures by UF faculty and ICBR personnel
emphasize practical applications of protein characterization technology and ground-breaking uses
of advanced methods such as NMR, capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry.
