Chiral Pharmaceuticals: Analysis & Separation

  May 31, 2007

The Center for Professional Innovation & Education, Malvern, PA
06/28/07

Who Should Attend

This two-day course is designed for chemists and research scientists in the pharmaceutical industry whose job functions involve analysis and separation of enantiomers, determination of racemic mixture and the economics and applications of optically active chiral pharmaceuticals. No expertise in chiral chemistry is necessary. By the end of this course, attendees will understand methods commonly employed to analyze and to separate chiral molecules.

Learning Objectives

Physical and chemical properties of chiral molecules will be discussed. Attendees will learn:

To recognize racemic mixture
Techniques to measure percent purity of enantiomers
To understand capillary electrophoresis techniques in chiral separation
HPLC instrumentation
To separate racemic mixture by a suitable chiral column
Additionally, the economics and applications of optically active chiral pharmaceutical will be addressed.

Course Description

This course addresses analytical methods commonly employed to investigate racemic mixture. Issues to be discussed include:

Chemistry of chiral molecules
Methods to recognize chiral compounds and enantiomers
Capillary electrophoresis technique in the separation of chiral compounds
Fundamental practices and principles of HPLC
