Transgenic Production of Human Therapeutics

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , Boston Massachusetts
June 29-30 1998

Program:
Now that the technology of producing transgenic organisms has been established, manufacturers of protein drugs are looking at transgenic production as a means of lowering cost and increasing quality. Transgenically produced protein is recovered by purification from biological fluids or harvested crops. The challenge of getting an organism to produce a molecule, compatible with its survival, which then undergoes the appropriate post-translational processing are key to the success of this mode of production. Drug manufacturers that are currently in production with fermentation and tissue culture are looking to convert to biopharming alternatives. In addition, the advent of whole animal cloning for the purpose of generating identical offspring, each born with the ability to produce transgenic products offers yet another approach. Plant-based systems offers new hope for increased viral safety of products originally derived from animals. The meeting seeks to create a venue for researchers in the field of transgenic production and those individuals seeking to define production schemes for biopharmceuticals to exchange information.
