ABOUT THE COURSE

The rapid growth in therapeutic options available in cancer medicine continues to expand as we approach the new millennium. These developments change and increase our ability to diagnose and treat cancer patients, often enabling extended remissions, decreased toxicity, and substantially improved prognoses. Even greater advances will come in the decades to follow.

In "Cancer Therapy for the New Millennium," leading experts from the United States and Europe will assemble to offer their vision of what the 21st century will bring in oncology. These notable clinicians and scientists will share new approaches, cutting-edge information, and breakthroughs to come in cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, clinical genetics, immunotherapy, and surgery.

Complementary therapies, which offer supportive and palliative care, also will be included. Alternative therapies will be reviewed, and guidelines to help distinguish between harmful alternatives and helpful complementary modalities will be provided. All oncologists will benefit from these presentations on state-of-the-art and future management of cancer. Information provided will help guide current and future oncology practices and expand the ability of oncologists to provide optimal cancer care.

THE COURSE AND ITS EVOLUTION
This conference is an outgrowth of The Amazon Project, or “Progetto Amazzone,” born in Palermo in 1996. The Project was founded by Sicilians Anna Barbera, a well-known journalist, and Lina Prosa, a prominent dramatist, and is supported by Sicilian and Italian government and medical institutions. It reflects the role of Amazon warriors in ancient history and translates their courage and sacrifices to the modern day fight against cancer. The Year 2000 conference, like its predecessors, focuses first on disseminating information on state-of-the-art oncology issues. It then includes a special program of international cultural activities at the Amazon Center in Palermo.

With its goal of changing the relationship between cancer patients and their caregivers through physician education, the Amazon Project owes its success to the contribution of experts of international renown.

OBJECTIVES
 To provide physicians with information about the most current as well as the anticipated new cancer treatments in various oncologic subspecialties
 To promote better understanding of the broad range of proven complementary/adjunctive therapies to treat the stress, anxiety, pain, fatigue, and other symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment
 To differentiate between beneficial complementary or supportive care and useless or harmful alternative therapies
 To provide an opportunity for oncologists to discuss treatment issues with internationally recognized experts in oncology and complementary medicine

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
 Clinical oncologists and other physicians who provide cancer care
 Fellows preparing for careers in oncology
