Discovery Strategies 2006: The Laboratory Mouse in Translational Cancer Research and Discovery

  March 02, 2006

The Jackson Laboratory, Club Quarters Downtown, New York, NY
May 18 - 19, 2006

The Discovery Strategies Conference is a yearly conference focused on the laboratory mouse as a tool for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. We strive to obtain a blend of academic, government and industry speakers and the conference size is limited to encourage the exchanges of ideas and networking between participants. The focus for 2006 is translational cancer research. Cancer is a leading cause of death in the United States, second only to heart disease. Challenges in developing effective therapeutic approaches to fight cancer are present at virtually every stage of the drug development pipeline, from target identification to preclinical testing for safety and efficacy. One of the biggest hurdles remains the reliable modeling of human cancer in vitro and in vivo and is underscored by a notable lack of concordance between systems. This conference will focus not only on how mouse genetic models may be applied to the study of cancer, but also how they may be used to find new drug targets, and evaluate the mechanism of action, efficacy and safety of new cancer drugs. The meeting will also discuss the role of stem cells in cancer and the problems they represent for treating cancer. Session Topics will include: The role of the laboratory mouse in identifying new targets for tomorrow's cancer therapies and diagnosis; The utilization of the laboratory mouse in evaluating the mechanism of action, efficacy, toxicology of potential cancer drug targets; Genetic changes in cancer.
